Lecturer: Prof. Jiří Homola, PhD., DSc. Institute of Photonics and Electronics, Prague, Czech Republic

Date: September 15-17, 2009

Place: VTT, Oulu

Course language: English

Duration of course: 3 days

Format: 5 hours/day

Grading: written final exam

Description

The course provides a broad introduction to the field of optical sensors and biosensors. The aim is to acquaint students with principles, design, fabrication and selected applications of optical sensors and biosensors.

Topics
  • Definition of a sensor, classification of sensors, physical, chemical sensors and biosensors – conceptual approaches, major performance characteristics.
  • Optical phenomena and technologies used in optical sensors: electromagnetic theory of light, material aspects, waveguide optics.
  • Interferometric sensors and their applications for measurement of physical, and (bio)chemical quantities.
  • Sensors based on spectroscopy of guided waves: grating coupler, resonant mirror and surface plasmon resonance sensors and their applications for measurement of physical and (bio)chemical quantities.
  • Sensors based on absorption and luminescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared and IR spectroscopy, sensors based on Raman (scattering) spectroscopy, surface enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy and their applications for measurement of (bio)chemical quantities.
