Infotech Oulu workshop 2004: Epitaxial growth and fabrication technology of semiconductor based optical devices
Oulu June 8-11, 2004
Infotech Oulu workshop 2004 fourth in series on Optoelectronic Devices and Instrumentation concentrating this time on "Epitaxial growth and fabrication technology of semiconductor based optical devices", will be organized in June 8-11, 2004. The workshop will be lectured in English and is intended for advanced undergraduate and post-graduate students with some background in optics, optoelectronics devices and their manufacturing techniques.
The workshop is closely associated with, and funded by, the Infotech Oulu Graduate School, Graduate School of Modern Optics and Photonics (Joensuu. Students of these graduate schools receive tentatively two credit points (2 ov) by successfully passing the course, but the participation is open to everybody.
Workshop contents
Epitaxal growth and fabrication technology of semiconductor based optical devices, Prof. Yi Luo, Tsinghua University, China
Workshop consists of approximately 22 lecture hours. A recreational social program, which also aims at promoting discussions with instructors and between participants, is an integral part of the workshop.
At the end of the workshop a final examination is arranged for graduate students, who are required to read the preparatory material delivered in advance. Financial support is available to the students of the graduate schools.

Workshop outline and instructor
Epitaxal growth and fabrication technology of semiconductor based optical devices, Prof. Yi Luo, Tsinghua University, China
Course outline:
- Basic concepts of optical devices: concept of mode, device structure for single mode, material for optical devices, basic properties of materials
- How to realize the vertical structures of optical devices: epitaxial growth, MOVPE, MBE, PECVD
- Mode control in transverse and longitudinal direction, photolithography, electron beam lithography, two beam interference holography
- Pattern transferring by etching, chemical etching, selective and nonselective etching, dry and plasma etching
Professor Yi Luo was born in Beijing, China, on February 22, 1960. He received the B. E. Degree in engineering from The Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1983, The M. E. degree in electronic engineering with a thesis entitled "Studies on the shapes and orders of the gratings in distributed feedback semiconductor lasers" and the Ph. D. degree in electronic engineering with a dissertation entitled "Studies on gain-coupled distributed feedback semiconductor lasers" both from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 1987 and 1990, respectively. He is one of the pioneers of the field of gain-coupled DFB semiconductor lasers. He is also the first to undertake research on monolithic integration of DFB lasers with electroabsorption modulators in China.
During Apr. 1990 to Mar. 1992, he was with the Optical Measurement Technology Development Company, Ltd., Tokyo, Japan. In 1992, he returned to Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and appointed as a lecturer of the Department of Electronic Engineering. Since the end of 1992, he has been a full professor of the same department. From 1997, He has also been the director of Sate Key Lab on Integrated Optoelectronics which is jointed by Tsinghua University, Semiconductor Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Jilin University.
His research interests are focusing on following fields:
- Distributed feedback (DFB) lasers including those with gain coupling and monolithic integration of DFB laser with other semiconductor optoelectronic devices.
- GaN based light emitting devices and electronic devices
- Materials growth technology using MOCVD and MBE.
- Devices fabrication technology such as dry etching, thin film deposition, annealing process, etc.
He has published more than 200 technical articles including 42 international journal papers and about 70 international conference papers.
