Infotech Oulu 15 years: Challenges for the future

Infotech Oulu organizes a seminar: Infotech Oulu 15 years: Challenges for the future on Wednesday November 16, 2011, at 12-14 in Tietotalo 1, in room TS101.

Infotech Oulu was founded 15 years ago. Information technology was designated as one of the focus research areas of the University of Oulu in the 1990s. Infotech Oulu organization was established to represent this research area in 1996.

The keynote speakers in the seminar are the Chair of the Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering at the Academy of Finland, Professor Erkki Oja and Vice Rector in Research in the University of Oulu Taina Pihlajaniemi. Both are Centre of Excellence unit Directors selected by the Academy of Finland.

In addition, top research of Infotech Oulu is presented from its three main research areas. Professor Matti Pietikäinen presents the use of the world-renowned Local Binary Pattern method for effective face and emotion recognition, Professor Juha Kostamovaara tells about time-to-digital converter circuits and Professor Matti Latva-aho reveals challenges for future wireless access.

Currently, the main research areas of Infotech Oulu are electronics, communications engineering, and computer science and information engineering. Major areas of information technology research at the University of Oulu include machine vision and ubiquitous computing technologies, wireless communications, high-speed electronics and photonics, biomedical engineering, and information systems and software.
