During fall 2009 and spring 2010 Infotech Oulu will organize a lecture series on grand challenges in ubiquitous technology. The lectures are given by world-renowned experts from different fields of ubiquitous technology. Post-graduate students can get credits from this series for their studies.

The visions of the future are regularly based on the availability of wireless, cheap, zero-power information infrastructure that is integrated into our everyday environment from workplaces to homes and from vehicles to clothing. Respective, albeit rather clumsy application demonstrations have been developed using today's technologies. In the other end of the continuum, novel components, circuit designs, and manufacturing technologies are envisioned, developed, and demonstrated, driven by improving materials knowledge. The actual creation of new information technology  that combines these ingredients has remained a grand challenge.

The research groups of Infotech Oulu groups are deeply involved and have high expertise in each of these fields. However, due to the rapid advances since their master's degree studies, or the scopes of their degrees,  the researchers may not be aware on the potential of each other's technologies. At the same time attractive opportunities for inter- and multi-disciplinary undertakings have obviously appeared, but are undetected by the prospective partnerships. Some ideas in this category have been identified, and have already resulted in cooperation.

The objective of this lecture series is to expose the senior researchers and graduate and undergraduate students to ideas and technologies outside their own fields. This is expected to contribute to informal inter-disciplinary cooperation, new research projects, and even to the establishment of new groups. The lecture series is accompanied by a graduate level course aiming at the development of interdisciplinary subjects.

As an optional part of the graduate course is Grand Challenge Workshop in Sanginjoki Camp Centre, organized by IEEE GOLD Finland, in October 30-31, 2009. Also non IEEE members are welcome (registration to Rafal Sliz -> rafal(at)ee.oulu.fi)
